This week is all about feelings with the Full Moon in Cancer. And for those currently navigating reality in Los Angeles, the feelings are many. It is one thing to witness tragic events from afar and another to feel them through the people you love. Ultimately for those living these threats on the ground, dealing with immense loss on so many levels, the experience is frightening, unforgettable, and life-changing. My heart is very heavy in solidarity with the Los Angelenos in these days, having lived there for 13 years, that beautiful city will always be a home, and I love so many of you who live there, deeply.
Current Astrology
Looking skyward, the Full Moon in Cancer ushers in waves of emotions and brings attention to our families, ancestry, karma, and the past. The Moon is conjunct Mars, which is still retrograde and recently moved back into Cancer. This means the present emotional journey could be heated, full of potent grief, or with intensity woven into the words, gestures, and circumstances that arise as revealing and healing occur.
Today’s Full Moon represents the ripening of the seeds sown during the New Moon of December 30th, 2024. Mars's retrospective energetics also keep us tied to the past, reminding us that we are still in a profound process of reflection rather than a time of forward momentum. Until February 23rd, Mars will remain retrograde in Cancer and continue to dig into the roots of our inner world, offering clues as to the lessons needed to be learned in this time.
Cancer & the 4th House
Cancer rules the 4th house in astrology, the realm of home and what home means to you. Some of you are in forced inquiry about this, facing the incredible loss of home in the fires. Others are in constant question, feeling restless and unsettled wherever they are despite current circumstances. And yet others have never felt at home, as if they belong somewhere in a faraway galaxy. Every one of these relationships to home, or the lack of it, is valid, and any answers sought around this topic could live inside of your 4th house of Cancer or where Cancer lives in your birth chart.
Cancer and the 4th house hosts the family of origin and is also the canvas from which we paint new traditions as we build our families. To enter the 4th house, you must cross the IC threshold or the root of your chart. Think of the sacrum or the root chakra, that which holds your experience of safety and security. Feeling safe is a challenging notion for many of us, and as cliche as it may sound, it truly does begin within. Most of us who suffer from not feeling safe do so based on early childhood traumas and abandonment issues. Those experiences must be validated and worked with, yet the past remains. Agency and the capacity to change our minds exist in the present, as do the keys to our current experience of feeling safe and secure.
Cancer is ancient memory, deep-seated wisdom, lineage, and maternal roots. This is the kingdom of the past, and it can be hard to let go when the nostalgia is running high. Knowing where we have been is invaluable in understanding our present. However, one trapdoor could lead us there without resources, and the temptation to stay there could be overwhelming if you're not vigilant. People live in the past; you might know some of these people or even find yourself gravitating to what has been, not letting go or holding grudges and resentment. If so, try listening and learning what there is to absorb from the past, honor it, and let it assist you in understanding how you got to where you are today. Then, practice being here now.
A Bridge to the Present
Our karma is a bridge from the past to the present, reminding us that life is a continuous revelation of seeds previously sown. The steps we’ve walked long before lead us to the doorway of our current moment. This doesn’t always make sense in the face of natural disasters or hardships. However, there is always a cause and effect in life, choices that lead us to the next set of decisions to make, and a current that flows between every chapter of life seamlessly.
Let’s be honest: the astrology of late has provided incredibly challenging terrain, and many obstacles will continue to emerge throughout the first half of this year. We may not feel a sigh of relief until May or even June, and even then, it may be fleeting as 2025 into 2026 is a portal of growth and change. The best advice I have for now is to feel your feelings and feel them all the way and then let go. Breathe deep, feel your feet, and remember who you are. You need you, your family and friends need you, and truly, we all need you.
Remember, self-care is a major necessity moving forward. You may need to access your resilience and self-reliance in a heartbeat, both of which require you to be in top self-care shape. And when taking care of each other in difficult times, sometimes all that is needed are a few words of love…and your presence is everything.
